What Crossmark is

Crossmark is a Crossref service that tells readers the current status of an article. The APET journals use this service for texts published from [date or issue of each journal] onward.

How it works

Participating texts display the Crossmark button on the article page and in the PDF. By clicking it, readers can check the current status of the text, even in a PDF downloaded some time ago. The result shows whether an update has been published and links to the corresponding notice.

Our commitment

The journals treat published articles as part of the scholarly record. Every change is made publicly, through one of the measures below, linked to the original article. Requests to withdraw a published article are assessed according to these same measures.

Registered updates

Measure When it applies How it is carried out
Erratum An error made by the journal that does not compromise the conclusions. Notice linked to the article and a corrected version, with the change recorded.
Corrigendum A relevant error made by the authors that does not invalidate the work. Notice signed by the authors, linked to the article.
Expression of concern Well-founded suspicion of misconduct or serious error, with an investigation under way. Notice linked to the article until the investigation is concluded.
Retraction Proven misconduct, an error that invalidates the conclusions, duplicate publication or plagiarism. Notice stating the reasons; the article remains available, marked “Retracted”, with a link to the notice.
Removal Infringement of rights, court order, risk to third parties or improperly disclosed personal data. Metadata retained, with an explanatory notice.

These notices receive their own DOI and are registered with Crossref. The metadata of the original article is also updated.

How to report a problem

Errors and possible integrity issues should be reported to the journal’s Editor-in-Chief at the email address listed above. Each case is assessed according to the journal’s policy, under the items “Corrections, expressions of concern, retractions and removals” and “Investigation of misconduct”, in Ethics and Integrity.
